WHAT WE’RE TEACHING

Switch

Session:

Switch to Action

Bottom Line :

Let God switch your feelings to actions.

Summary:

We live in a time and place where things come pretty easily to us. We don’t have to hunt for our food—we simply throw it in the microwave. We can easily Google any question we have. And if we want to get in touch with a friend, we don’t have to hand-write a letter and wait days or weeks for them to respond—we simply send a text. It’s pretty convenient to have a fast and easy route to so many things that we want. But we can’t get everything quickly or easily—including our faith. Sometimes, in our faith, we have a big emotional moment with God and think that following Jesus will be pretty easy. But then we go to school on Monday or sit down to spend time with God, and realize that things are going to be a little more difficult than we thought. So what do we do? How do we keep our faith switched “on,” even when we don’t feel like putting in the work? This week, we may just find some answers as we look at the life of Peter one more time.

WHAT WE’RE TEACHING

Switch

Session:

Switch to Love

Bottom Line :

Let God switch your Judgement to Love.

Summary:

Have you ever dealt with a two-faced person? Someone who acted one way in one situation, but then acted completely differently in another? Those people do a lot of pretending.  Sometimes, we call those people hypocrites. You’ve probably seen this happen in your everyday relationships, but when it happens among Christians, it can be especially damaging. Sometimes, Christians act in ways that are very unlike the way Jesus says to live. And when that happens, sometimes the actions of hypocritical Christians have the potential to switch off our faith. But what if it didn’t have to? What if there’s actually a way to deal with hypocritical Christians in a way that can switch our faith in God “on” in brand new ways? This week, we’ll see how Peter knew exactly what that was like.

WHAT WE’RE TEACHING

Switch

Session:

Switch to Faith

Bottom Line :

Let God switch your doubt to faith.

Summary:

Have you ever felt absolutely sure that something was going to happen, only to be proven wrong later? Maybe you took a test you were sure you were going to ace, or played a game you thought you’d win, or expected a certain super awesome birthday present you were sure you’d get, but then… you didn’t. Disappointment set in. You felt let down. And if we’re disappointed often enough, sometimes that disappointment can leave us with doubt. We all know what it feels like to be let down by people or circumstances, but some of us know what it feels like to think you’ve been let down by God, too. Doubting God is something we’ll probably all experience at some point. But is doubting God really the opposite of having faith in God? Do our doubts automatically switch “off” our faith? This week, as we take a look at the life of Peter, we might discover a way for us to let our doubts actually switch our faith “on” in a brand new way.

 WHAT WE’RE TEACHING

Switch

Session: Switch to Grace

Bottom Line : Let God switch your guilt to grace.

Summary:

img_0388-1Every day, we probably flip more switches than we can count—everything from the lights in our bedrooms, to the alarms that jolt us out of bed, to the microwaves that cook our breakfasts. Having the ability to turn things on and off is something we usually take for granted. But have you ever felt like your faith has an on/off switch, too? Have you ever experienced something that made you feel like your faith was switched on in a brand new way? What about something that switched your faith off? No matter how much or little faith you have, we all experience things in life that make it difficult to have faith in God. One of those things is guilt. Because sometimes we do things or make decisions that we can’t take back. Sometimes our guilt gets so big that it actually switches “off” our faith. But as we’ll see today, the apostle Peter made some pretty bad decisions, too. And yet, somehow, Peter was actually able to let his guilt switch “on” his faith in a brand new way.

Kickstarting Your Relationship With Your Teenager
by Carey Nieuwhof

So, let’s just start by saying I’m not the most mechanically inclined person God ever created. But somehow that doesn’t exempt me from owning a garage filled with small engines: a snowblower, lawnmower, leaf blower, weed trimmer and the like. My technique for starting these machines is always the same: push the buttons, prime the engine, and pull hard on the pull-cord. Most of the time my equipment starts.

WHAT WE’RE TEACHING

WE ARE YOUNG

Session: Prove It!

Bottom Line : If you want to make a difference, prove you can.

img_0299Summary:img_0297

Have you ever been frustrated because you feel like the adults in your life don’t take you seriously? Maybe there was a time when someone said you weren’t talented enough, good enough, or smart enough. Adults’ opinions and perceptions about teenagers are pretty powerful. Sometimes they can even shape the way you think about yourself. And to make things even more frustrating, sometimes an adult’s perception of you is based on the negative things that other middle schoolers do. So what do you do? Is it possible to make a difference in the world even when it seems like some adults will never believe in you? Is it possible to change adults’ perceptions of you, or maybe even of middle schoolers everywhere? This week, we’ll look at some advice that the apostle Paul gave to Timothy about how to prove you can make a difference, even when it seems like the odds are against you.

WHY YOU HAVEN’T COMPLETELY BLOWN IT AS A PARENT

Ever feel like you’ve completely messed up your kids, and now it’s too late to fix them?

If you knew what you knew now when they were babies, you would have been such an amazingly better parent. But you didn’t. and now they’re wrecked. Or, at least warped.

Welcome to the club. I’m pretty sure 99% of all parents have been there. And we’re not actually sure the other 1% is human, in case you were wondering.

WE ARE YOUNG

Session:

Believe It!

Bottom Line :

If you want to make a difference, believe you can.

Summary:

Adults spend a lot of time and money trying to look and feel younger, while most middle schoolers want to look and feel older. Maybe you wish you were old enough to have a phone, or drive a car, or go on a date. Maybe you just wish you were old enough to make more of your own decisions. There are perks to being young (like not having to pay bills, or pay or taxes, or have a job), but maybe you feel like the negatives outweigh the positives. Maybe sometimes being young makes you feel frustrated and powerless. Maybe you feel like life doesn’t really happen until you are older. But what if it’s true that you don’t have to wait until you’re older to make your life really count? Through a letter written from Paul to Timothy, we might just discover that being young doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference in the world right now.

Think About This

PASSING DOWN A FAITH-FILLED LIFE, NOT A TRIAL-FREE LIFE

Do you remember the first time your child was in harm’s way? I remember the time my oldest kicked a bright bouncy ball and landed on her head on the concrete. I remember when my youngest got her feelings hurt by a friend and cried real tears, not whiny tears. I’ve watched my kids hurt many times, and it stinks.

My knee-jerk reaction is to protect, hover, block, or tattle. Basically do anything to prevent my children from feeling pain.

The same goes with their faith.

WHAT WE’RE TEACHING

WE ARE YOUNG

Have you ever been around an older person who talks about what it was like to be young? They reminisce about the music they listened to, the lack of responsibility they had, the freedom they experienced. They almost always talk about being young as if it’s awesome. And for the most part, they’re right. Being young is awesome. You don’t pay taxes. You don’t have to understand insurance. And someone, someone other than you, buys you snacks. It’s a pretty good set up. But just because being young is awesome doesn’t mean it’s easy.

There are some tough parts to being a student. For starters, there’s school. Maybe you’ve heard someone say those are the best years of your life, but it sure doesn’t feel that way when you’re sitting in Geometry class. What’s worse is when people ignore you or treat you like you don’t matter because you’re younger—like somehow the date on your birth certificate disqualifies you from having an opinion. In fact, maybe one of the toughest parts of being young is feeling like you don’t count yet, like you can’t be heard or respected or even helpful until you’re older. And it’s frustrating because, deep down it feels like that shouldn’t be true, like there’s something wrong with that system. If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re in good company. As we take a look at two letters from the New Testament written to a young church leader named Timothy, we find not only why by but how to keep anyone from looking down on us just because we are young.
